In the 20th century Claude Levi-Strauss said that all stories are propelled forward by conflict that is caused by characters and events opposing each other: that opposites are important to a story.

Vanity and Insecurity :Chandler and Will
When Will first comes onto the scene he meets chandler and chandler says 'I think that it would be better for my ego if we were to not stand next to each other' whereas Will goes on about how he has lost 100+ pounds and how he is skinny and rich.
Past and Present: Rachel and Will
Will is still caught up in the past with Rachel apparently being horrible to him, however Rachel doesn't eve realise she did wrong and has completely forgotten about it.
Uptight and Relaxed: Will and Ross
Ross' character is generally uptight and boring, especially when he is next to Will and Will asks about his job and Ross doesn't want to say his job because it is boring and Will had just said 'Man, we were lame back then, can you remember how into dinosaurs we were?'
Hate and Attraction: Will and Rachel
When Rachel comes onto the scene she says 'oh my god Monica who is that' and 'He has really got that sexy smouldering thing going on', meanwhile Will is mouthing 'I hate you' to Rachel.
Kind and Rude: Rachel and Will
Rachel offers Will yams but he rudely declines, Similarly when she is trying to be kind about asking if they knew each other properly from high school he is rude and says 'You are unbelievable'.
Temptation and Will Power: Both Will
Will declines crisps from Joey, but he then goes on to eat loads of yams, which he also declines before, until he gets annoyed with Rachel, which causes him to give into temptation and loose his will power.
