Cranford Write Up; Social Class

Cranford Social Class

Cranford Class Notes

mise en scene
Harry
scruffy clothes
dark small house
bare feet
low key lighting
Mr Carte
rexpensive boots
cane
nice office
Lady of manor
white extravagent dress
Ladies in carriages
curled hair, expensive dresses
Man on horse
top hat
The mise-en-scene in this clip reveals a contrast between rich and poor people. The poor people are seen to be living in the forest and wear dark, scruffy clothes. In contrast to this, the rich are dressed in higher class clothing. Focusing on Harry and the older man, he is shown to be a lower-class boy with little knowledge and no formal schooling. The dark, dingy lighting contrasts with the older man, who has clean and sophisticated clothes. The older man, Mr Carter, pays the boy and as the boy eats the bread in the office, he is seen to be sympathetic towards Harry.sound
birds and rustling in the woods
poor family live out of the way
dialogue 'Appy birthday 'Arry' indicates non Rp speech

door squeaks = run down cottage
horses and well spoken Lady of the manor indicate wealth

heavy depressing music
music when dad rises indicated he hold the power
when no dialogue, indicates depressing
music when boy giddy= emotional
music upbeat when work commences on marquee

When we are first introduced to Harry, the music, non-diegetic sound is heavy and depressing, this represents the class of the boy, showing that he does not have a happy or fulfilling life at this young age. The door squeaking when he arrives home indicates that his family do not have wealth.
When the boy enters the greenhouse, the music is of a higher pitch which could indicate the higher status of the owners of the greenhouse.
The viewer is then introduced to the sound of heavy footsteps giving us the impression that someone of higher status is approaching and this creates tension.

camera
can't see the house in full view, hidden by trees shows Harry shouln't be there
camera moves with and focuses on Harry, shows he's important,
over the shoulder shot of father telling Harry off
camera shos Harry looking up to all charcters
mid/long shot of cramped room
zooms in on boots, showing how grateful he is for them
mid shot of Harry alone in dark
house is surrounded by leaves and shot through the window shows he is an outsider
Mr Carter's boots juxtapose with Harry shoes
two shot shows the differences between the two
high angle of Mr Carter shows his status
Lady on steps = status
master shot of doctor on horse implies he is important

In this clip, the camera angles show class and status in a variety of ways. The juxtaposition of the shack and the manor is shown through the master shots; the shack covered with foliage versus the manor surrounded by  by space to show its size. The interrior of the shack is abre and the dialohgue is the focus, not the interrior. In the office, the master shot empasizes its status. A two shot of the pair shows the clear differences in class and status.  The camera follows the work of the outdoor workers to show manual labour compared to the lords and ladies in the carriages who are doing nothing to prepare.editing
The editing in this clip is continuitiy editing to create a sense of realism. The conversation between Harry and his father is carried out using shot reverse shots which illustrates the father's harsh reaction to his son wanting to learn.
The cutting between the shack, the greehouse and the manor activities reveals how the class of the charcters is closely connected to the locations where they live or work. Many uses of eyeline match and point of view shots are used when the focus in on Harry, indicating that he likes the boots and longs for the bunch
of grapes but restrains himself; he is accustomed at the young age of ten to accept disappointment

Holiday Homework: The Street

In the street, there is a clear class which runs throughout, however there are different strengths of those classes. Such as the main family are clearly working class but compared to the lovers family they are higher in that class than them. This is shown by the way that the family's interact with eachother, as with both family's arguing there is still a difference. This is shown by the main family keeping the argument behind closed doors with the children away and trying for them not to hear, although this is unsuccessful, but with the lovers family, the children are getting into trouble and being punished and also the argument is with everyone beside the lover. The family's have different types of being close, as the lovers family are not being close, whereas you can see that the main family are close, besides the parents, as they cannot stand to be together and also the Mother blames the Father for their child being hit by a car. Also the status in the main family is that the male is clearly dominant with his wife, but the woman is dominant with her children, as it should be. However, even though she is dominant with her children, she is also very close to them, unlike the lovers wife and her children, who gives the impression that she is very distant with her children or is in face, very distant with everyone. The status of the street is very dominant, which is shown by the man (whom i recognise from Harry Potter), as he seems to have a higher status than everyone else in the group as he is the one that everyone looks towards when it comes to helping the little girl. Therefore, the overall class of the street, i would say, would be working class, but with different aspects of it.

CSI: Miami Opening Scene and NCIS Opening Scene.

There are 33 shots all together, which the average amount of time that a shot is on screen is about 1-2 seconds, however the shots on the casts faces last longer than the establishing shots.

The clip starts with an establishing shot which then cuts and zooms into the main character Horatio on a boat and then cuts to him on the job and then to the other characters.

The music of the clip interacts with the editing as when there is a heavy beat the image changes, and when there is a long beat there is a blurred overlayer which cuts together with the music.

Also there is a constant theme on the cuts of scientific equations which collaborates with the overall theme of the TV drama.

The cuts of the introduction are too long, which makes the clip boring, however the images are good and represent the programme well, but they drag on for too long.

The music is too dull for the action that is going on in the clips, which bores the person watching it. It is not upbeat enough for the programme.

There is fading in the introduction which is accompanied by a negative effect on parts of the body.

The better clip is the clip for CSI: Miami as it is more entertaining for the viewer and also the shots are better which overall make it a better clip.

Skins, Series One, Episode One.

Firstly, through camera angles we are shown at the beginning when we are first shown Tony, the camera is zooming out of his face. So when we watch it we are first introduced to him, and then as the shot widens we are introduced into his life, getting to know t
he type of person he is, and what he is interested in, all by his bedroom. Also when he is doing his excersises in the morning we do not get shown all of the excersises, this is to show that he is doing lots of different excersises over a long period of time, but the programme would be boring if there was 15 minutes of him doing press ups. Also, when he is doing his exercises we are only shown the important parts of his body which go with the muscles he is working on. Then when he is looking at his neighbour, through the camera angles we get to see exactly what he does, so it gives the impression that he is a bit of a 'Peeping Tom'.

Secondly, through clothing and mise-en-scene, we are shown that When Tony is doing his exercises he is only in his boxers, this is more than likely to show 'masculinity' and also to represent most teenage boys, who sleep in their underwear. Also his bedding is quite interesting, as it gives us the impression that he is a bit of a ladies man, or just that he thinks that he is a ladies.

Finally, through sound we are shown by The non-diegetic sound, when it is used in the first scene it is the alarm clock and then his own music. This gives us an impression that he is a nomal teenager, who likes their music, but is into rap-music. Also when he is sneaking out of the house you can hear his Dad shouting and swearing and getting very stressed. The same when he is leaving the house 2 minutes later.

Homework For Ms Abrahamson

RESEARCH THREE TV DRAMAS WITH TEENAGERS IN AND NOTE DOWN WHAT TYPICAL CLOTHING THEY WEAR, THEIR BEHAVIOUR, AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS WITH PARENTS WHICH WE EXPECT AND THEN WHETHER OR NOT THEY OCCUR..

Hollyoaks
In Hollyoaks you would expect the teenagers in here to dress quite current, i.e the 'indie' look, average jeans and for girls floral tops or tops with iconic pop stars on. Also you would expect the girls who go out to wear quite revealing clothes. In Hollyoaks this is what they wear as the programme is about current events, therefore they have to keep up with the current fashion trends. Also you would expect their behaviour to be not 100% perfect, but to at least be decent as they are role models for the people who watch it, but if their behaviour is bad, then they would have to face the consequences to show to the target audience that if you do bad things then you will get punished for it. Also, their relationships with parents you would assume that there would be plenty of different types of relationships, as everyone has different relationships, this is shown with the case of Phoebe, who doesn't live with her parents, Theresa, who lives with her other relatives instead because her Mother doesn't care about her, and Jono does live with his parents, however you don't see their relationship. Going through the cast, i have realised that none of the main characters who are teenagers have proper relationships with their parents, as only very few actually live with their parent, however their relationships aren't shown.

90210
In 90210 their clothing, because of them all being wealthy and living in America, is not the same as what people of that age would wear in England. We would expect them to all wear jeans or leggings, but due to the weather the girls can wear more feminine clothing. Due to the drama being set in America in England we all have the view that they would be reckless and go out and party all the time, which in 90210 is correct. Also, we would all suspect that there would be one person in the group who would be a little more cautious than the others, which there is, Silver.

Binary Opposites: F.R.I.E.N.D.S

In the 20th century Claude Levi-Strauss said that all stories are propelled forward by conflict that is caused by characters and events opposing each other: that opposites are important to a story.

For Example...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYHjfyMl54k

Vanity and Insecurity :Chandler and Will
When Will first comes onto the scene he meets chandler and chandler says 'I think that it would be better for my ego if we were to not stand next to each other' whereas Will goes on about how he has lost 100+ pounds and how he is skinny and rich.

Past and Present: Rachel and Will
Will is still caught up in the past with Rachel apparently being horrible to him, however Rachel doesn't eve realise she did wrong and has completely forgotten about it.

Uptight and Relaxed: Will and Ross
Ross' character is generally uptight and boring, especially when he is next to Will and Will asks about his job and Ross doesn't want to say his job because it is boring and Will had just said 'Man, we were lame back then, can you remember how into dinosaurs we were?'

Hate and Attraction: Will and Rachel
When Rachel comes onto the scene she says 'oh my god Monica who is that' and 'He has really got that sexy smouldering thing going on', meanwhile Will is mouthing 'I hate you' to Rachel.

Kind and Rude: Rachel and Will
Rachel offers Will yams but he rudely declines, Similarly when she is trying to be kind about asking if they knew each other properly from high school he is rude and says 'You are unbelievable'.

Temptation and Will Power: Both Will
Will declines crisps from Joey, but he then goes on to eat loads of yams, which he also declines before, until he gets annoyed with Rachel, which causes him to give into temptation and loose his will power.

Good Cop Homework

When the main character is first introduced, he is introduced as a murderer, this is shown by him having a gun and blood on his hands, also the guilty look on his face, the look of disturbance to his natural self, this gives the impression to the audience that he is the bad guy, not the Good Cop, and that maybe he is in trouble or hiding. With his meeting with the woman and her daughter, the atmosphere is awkward and intense, this is shown by their facial expressions, which shows that they’ve been interrupted, and they do not want to be spoken to by him, creating the impression that they have a history, and that he has somehow missed it up, making the audience question what has happened. Also his relationship with people at his workplace is that he is quite close to them, as in they know a lot about him and his social life out of work. I know this because he speaks to them about his and Cassie’s relationship, which he obviously has a great insight of, unlike the audience at this moment. Sav is represented as very calm, alert and very serious about his job, this is shown by in the café; he is not even able to eat his meal due to his ‘police instinct’ kicking in about the man in the café. He is also shown to be calm with the way that he approaches Amy in the toilet, his tone of voice is very calm, and he does not frighten her, he uses calm words in order to calm her. When Sav is dealing with the victims with the dead baby, he again uses a very comforting tone and uses comforting words; he also, when having to call the incident in, goes away from the victims, to show remorse, and tries to protect them from hearing the officer’s talk about the death. To the audience the main character, Sav, is represented as someone who knows the feeling of losing someone, as he is particularly careful with the words that he says, and he tries to connect with the boy so that he will trust him and confide in him.

Lesson Notes, 04/09/12

In todays lesson we had a basic introduction to Mrs Abrahamson's side of the course. This involved us grouping the several Drama's we were given into the different genre's of 'Drama' my listings were:

Soaps
- Hollyoaks
- Eastenders
- Coronation Street

Teenage-based
- Shameless

Fictional/Fantasy
- Robin Hood
- Merlin
- Doctor Who
- Torchwood

Period Drama
- Downton Abbey
- Life On Mars

Action/Crime
- Good Cop
- The Wire
- Luther
- Wallander
- Holby City
- Spooks

We also watched a 5 minute clip of Good Cop, we then discussed what had happened in the scene, discussing the camera shots, and specifically why the cameras had zoomed in on the gun, which had obviously been used as a murder weapon, several times. Also we discussed the title sequence, and several viewed their opinion that they did not think that the title sequence correctly linked to the drama, this was because it wasn't very open about what the drama was about, as if you were just to watch the title sequence you would not guess that it was a crime drama, as it just had several views of Liverpool at night.

TV Drama Overview.. Mrs Abrahamson's Homework

PICK ONE TV DRAMA TO WRITE AN OVERVIEW OF TYPES OF PLOT, CHARACTER, AND THE APPEAL OF IT TO AUDIENCES. WHAT GENRE IS YOUR DRAMA? WHAT VISUAL CLUES/MUSIC/OTHER ASPECTS GIVE YOU CLUES TO THE GENRE?

NCIS

I have chosen to write an overview of NCIS, an American crime drama. The general plots of the drama is there is a team of agents working for NCIS, investigation crimes, there usually is a plot twist half way through, generally being them being misguided on their suspect for the incidents. The characters all have a 'witty' quality about them, they all are seemed to be like a family, comfortable but all have their own roles in the 'family'. The appeal to the audience would be that the characters are all relatable, likeable and the plots are always different, there are no repeats or similar episodes, all of them are unique. During the episode, there is the obvious occasional gunshot, police siren or scream in the background, but as the series is office based, there is a lot of background noise, and this is things such as telephones, other agents speaking, and the opening and closing of doors. Also the seriousness of the characters show that they are out to get something sorted, which gives you a clue to the genre, showing that it is serious, and perhaps crime related. The main give away is obviously the plots, but also the uniforms of the agents and the show title (providing that you know what NCIS stands for).

Introduction Work

CASE STUDY OF BRAVE

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin, surly Lord Macintosh and cantankerous Lord Dingwall. Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. (courtesy of http://collider.com/brave-pixar-movie-synopsis/111539/ ) The genre of the film is a child’s adventure film, rated PG. The film budget was $185 million. REPRESENTATION IN TV DRAMA OR SOAP OPERA
TASK ONE
ABBEY SCIUTO – PLAYED BY PAULEY PERRETTE IN NCIS
The Genre of NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) is a police procedural drama television series, Abbey Sciuto, who is a Forensic Specialist at NCIS from New Orleans, who is aged mid to late 20’s (Oldest possible age could be 30) I have tried to research her Ethnicity, but I am unsure if it is actually unveiled in any of the episodes, and I don’t think that it has any significance for her character because she is a lot about mystery. Her costume usually involves a long while lab coat, skinny black jeans or a denim skirt, with a plain black top or small design/pattern on it, also she wears chains and a dog collar round her neck, she also wears bright red lipstick with her hair in pigtails with a full fringe. Her life style is Hectic, Music related, advanced, dramatic and risky. This is all based on her line of work. Her friends include DiNozzo, Ziva, McGee and Ducky, who are her work colleagues, but she specifically has a close relationship with Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who is the supervisory special agent. Abby is known to be related to a Goth image, She likes Heavy metal, has eleven tattoos, and decorate her lab with toys with unusual names. Her motivation in most situations are her ability to please Gibbs, as he usually rewards her with a kiss on the cheek or ‘Caf-Pow’ which is a Caffeine based soda drink. Abby does not have a love life, her ex-boyfriend (Mikel Mawher) returned in an episode which complicated an important court case, even though she has a restraining order against him. Her relationships with people are more like brotherly, sisterly, or fatherly, as she does not really have time for a love life. Abby was adopted to two Deaf parents, meaning that she had to learn sign language, which comes in handy in an investigation. She also has no idea who her Biological parents are. A key moment in the series is when her assistant ‘Charles “Chip” Sterling’ framed her Colleague DiNozzo, for murder, but when Abby found out, Chip threatened her with a knife, leading her to be insecure about future people coming into her lab, such as an intern from College who is hoping to go into her line of work, which happens in a future episode. Giving that in the last series of NCIS there was a bomb planted in the Navy Yard, causing all of the team to be put at risk, Gibbs leapt onto Abby to protect her, the beginning of the next series will start with a bang and she will more than likely be in hospital due to injuries from the bomb, although it did not show who was injured and killed, so the beginning of the next series is completely unknown, but that causes the audience of the programme to want to watch the next series to see who is alive and well.
TASK TWO
Scene: In Interrogation room
McGee: Gibbs, Abs wants to see us in her Lab
CUT TO ABBY’S LAB
Gibbs: What’s up Abs? (walks towards Abby and computer)
Abby: (while wandering around a 2M2 area) I’ve been analysing the bullet, and it definitely wasn’t a pistol Gibbs, Seven point six two millimetres. So it’s a rifle, however I don’t know what kind of rifle, I will try and match the casing on the computer, but that might take hours, it definitely isn’t an AK47, the grooving is wrong, with no eye witnesses, this can confirm the long barrel and the ammo load.
McGee: So it must have been long range, really long range
Gibbs: A sniper
Abby: Exactly
Gibbs: Good work Abs (kisses Cheek)
Abby: *Cough*
(Gibbs looks over to chemical cabinet and leaves with McGee)
-          Caf  - Pow is in cabinet   -
Abby: (While running over to the Cabinet with a big grin) How does he do it?!

-          The Similarities are the type of music that the magazine’s cover, however they vary on audiences, and ‘heaviness’ of the music that they cover. As Kerrang and Rock Sound are mainly aimed at Teenagers, NME, early 20’s, and classic rock 30+.
What do you think are the reasons for its popularity (or otherwise)?
-          I think that the popularity is due to the magazine being aimed at teenagers, and it relates to the teenagers that read it, and involves popular artists which they adore.
What does the magazine offer its readers?
-          The magazine offers the readers posters, competitions where merchandise can be won, concert tickets, and meets and greets from the artists involved. Also it enables them to keep up with the Recent music industry news with the bands that they love.

Why do magazines use straplines?
-          They use straplines to show the special offers, and to show the main articles in the magazine.
Look at the positioning of the main image over the masthead. What does it suggest about the readership of the magazine?
-          It suggests that the readers will are fans of the band on the cover, however they like the front-person more, hence why they have made her closer than the rest of the band.
How many colours have been used on the cover and why these colours?
-          White, black and pink are the main colours. Black, I suspect because of the target audience and the band on the cover, as their ‘fashion’ is wearing dark/black clothing. White, because it will stand out on the front of the magazine to catch the audience’s eye on the cover. Pink, because it is a contrast colour/girly colour against the plain white and black, which will fit in with Amy Lee on the cover of the magazine.
Look at the fonts and comment on why they have been used to appeal to audience and genre.
-          The font for ‘Evanescence’ is sketchy, but large and thick, therefore the audience would spot it as it is clear and stands out a lot, Similar with the ‘Lostphophets’ on the lower left of the cover. Also, the writing under Evanescence is capitals, bold and fairly large, therefore also being clear.
How do the cover lines entice the reader?
-          The cover lines entice the reader by showing the main articles, which may trigger someone who does not usually buy the magazine to buy it, especially if they like the look of the articles.
Why does the institution use a slogan?
-          They use a slogan, because it is something which can be recognised all around, it is also used on their music channel.
How does the masthead fit in with the genre of the music magazine?
-          It is simple, but still stands out, just like the music that the magazine covers.
Comment on the main image. Camera shot/ depth/subject/colour/costume.
-          The main image consists of Evanescence, all dressed in black with their usual clothing/makeup, but with Amy Lee, who is the singer in the front, and her head over the masthead. However the band in the back are almost shadowed, which could show that in their band that people care more about the singer than the others, which to be fair, happens a lot in the music industry.
How do the stickers appeal to the audience?
-          The stickers may appeal, because of the price being the same; they would want to get it as a bargain.

Why does the barcode appear where it does?
-          It appears there so that it is easy to see, so that the person buying it can easily see how much it costs, and also so that the cashier can scan it easily.
