REPRESENTATION IN TV DRAMA OR SOAP OPERA
TASK ONE
The Genre of NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) is a police procedural drama television series, Abbey Sciuto, who is a Forensic Specialist at NCIS from New Orleans, who is aged mid to late 20’s (Oldest possible age could be 30) I have tried to research her Ethnicity, but I am unsure if it is actually unveiled in any of the episodes, and I don’t think that it has any significance for her character because she is a lot about mystery. Her costume usually involves a long while lab coat, skinny black jeans or a denim skirt, with a plain black top or small design/pattern on it, also she wears chains and a dog collar round her neck, she also wears bright red lipstick with her hair in pigtails with a full fringe. Her life style is Hectic, Music related, advanced, dramatic and risky. This is all based on her line of work. Her friends include DiNozzo, Ziva, McGee and Ducky, who are her work colleagues, but she specifically has a close relationship with Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who is the supervisory special agent. Abby is known to be related to a Goth image, She likes Heavy metal, has eleven tattoos, and decorate her lab with toys with unusual names. Her motivation in most situations are her ability to please Gibbs, as he usually rewards her with a kiss on the cheek or ‘Caf-Pow’ which is a Caffeine based soda drink. Abby does not have a love life, her ex-boyfriend (Mikel Mawher) returned in an episode which complicated an important court case, even though she has a restraining order against him. Her relationships with people are more like brotherly, sisterly, or fatherly, as she does not really have time for a love life. Abby was adopted to two Deaf parents, meaning that she had to learn sign language, which comes in handy in an investigation. She also has no idea who her Biological parents are. A key moment in the series is when her assistant ‘Charles “Chip” Sterling’ framed her Colleague DiNozzo, for murder, but when Abby found out, Chip threatened her with a knife, leading her to be insecure about future people coming into her lab, such as an intern from College who is hoping to go into her line of work, which happens in a future episode. Giving that in the last series of NCIS there was a bomb planted in the Navy Yard, causing all of the team to be put at risk, Gibbs leapt onto Abby to protect her, the beginning of the next series will start with a bang and she will more than likely be in hospital due to injuries from the bomb, although it did not show who was injured and killed, so the beginning of the next series is completely unknown, but that causes the audience of the programme to want to watch the next series to see who is alive and well.
Scene: In Interrogation room
McGee: Gibbs, Abs wants to see us in her Lab
CUT TO ABBY’S LAB
Gibbs: What’s up Abs? (walks towards Abby and computer)
Abby: (while wandering around a 2M2 area) I’ve been analysing the bullet, and it definitely wasn’t a pistol Gibbs, Seven point six two millimetres. So it’s a rifle, however I don’t know what kind of rifle, I will try and match the casing on the computer, but that might take hours, it definitely isn’t an AK47, the grooving is wrong, with no eye witnesses, this can confirm the long barrel and the ammo load.
McGee: So it must have been long range, really long range
Gibbs: A sniper
Abby: Exactly
Gibbs: Good work Abs (kisses Cheek)
Abby: *Cough*
(Gibbs looks over to chemical cabinet and leaves with McGee)
- Caf - Pow is in cabinet -
Abby: (While running over to the Cabinet with a big grin) How does he do it?!-END OF SCENE-

Look at the positioning of the main image over the masthead. What does it suggest about the readership of the magazine?
- It suggests that the readers will are fans of the band on the cover, however they like the front-person more, hence why they have made her closer than the rest of the band.
How many colours have been used on the cover and why these colours?
- White, black and pink are the main colours. Black, I suspect because of the target audience and the band on the cover, as their ‘fashion’ is wearing dark/black clothing. White, because it will stand out on the front of the magazine to catch the audience’s eye on the cover. Pink, because it is a contrast colour/girly colour against the plain white and black, which will fit in with Amy Lee on the cover of the magazine.
Look at the fonts and comment on why they have been used to appeal to audience and genre.
- The font for ‘Evanescence’ is sketchy, but large and thick, therefore the audience would spot it as it is clear and stands out a lot, Similar with the ‘Lostphophets’ on the lower left of the cover. Also, the writing under Evanescence is capitals, bold and fairly large, therefore also being clear.
How do the cover lines entice the reader?
- The cover lines entice the reader by showing the main articles, which may trigger someone who does not usually buy the magazine to buy it, especially if they like the look of the articles.
Why does the institution use a slogan?
- They use a slogan, because it is something which can be recognised all around, it is also used on their music channel.
How does the masthead fit in with the genre of the music magazine?
- It is simple, but still stands out, just like the music that the magazine covers.
Comment on the main image. Camera shot/ depth/subject/colour/costume.
- The main image consists of Evanescence, all dressed in black with their usual clothing/makeup, but with Amy Lee, who is the singer in the front, and her head over the masthead. However the band in the back are almost shadowed, which could show that in their band that people care more about the singer than the others, which to be fair, happens a lot in the music industry.
How do the stickers appeal to the audience?
- The stickers may appeal, because of the price being the same; they would want to get it as a bargain.
Why does the barcode appear where it does?
- It appears there so that it is easy to see, so that the person buying it can easily see how much it costs, and also so that the cashier can scan it easily.
